During the design of a modern warehouse, the question inevitably arises — where and how will the lift truck/stacker batteries be charged and replaced This question becomes especially important when the warehouse operates in two shifts or around the clock, and the number of lift trucks exceeds just a couple or three units. It is likely decided to build a dedicated battery room.
Typically, this is a separate room with roller conveyors, chargers mounted on the walls, and shelves equipped with containers of distilled water. The room’s area and height must be large enough to allow lift equipment to enter.
Considering that, for example, the battery of a reach truck weighs around 900–1000 kg, pushing it onto the roller track and then sliding the charged battery back in requires a lot of effort and, more importantly, time. Often, these battery rooms lack cleanliness and organization, and the roller conveyors are frequently damaged by lift trucks.

Laovarustus OÜ battery room — brief description and operating principle:
The room width is 4300 mm, the length depends on the number of batteries, and the minimum height is 2200 mm. Sections of roller tracks are installed along the walls, where the batteries are charged. The chargers are mounted on the top level of the sections. Each battery is equipped with a water pipe that supplies water from a common container. In the center of the room, on the floor between the sections, metal strips are installed, 6 mm high and 40 mm wide. These are rails for carts equipped with roller tracks. The rails continue outside the battery room for approximately 2500 mm. The cart’s rollers are equipped with a drive mechanism; an electric motor rotates them both clockwise and counterclockwise. The height of the cart’s roller track can be adjusted using hydraulics. This feature is designed to allow operation with different types of warehouse lift forks. The rollers and hydraulic system are controlled by buttons or a joystick.
The warehouse worker brings the lift truck with an empty battery toward the battery room and parks it parallel to the rails. For simplicity, a line or special protective barriers could be marked on the floor. When the battery is ready for removal, the worker brings the cart to the lift truck and pushes the battery out (about one-third of its length) onto the cart’s roller track. Then the roller track can be activated, and the cart itself takes the battery onto it. The worker pushes the cart with the battery into the room, parks it at the corresponding section, activates the cart’s roller track in the opposite direction, and the battery automatically moves to the charging station and waits to be connected. The installation of a charged battery onto the lift truck is carried out in the same way.
Advantages of our solution:
The lift truck does not need to enter the battery room. Thus, the room’s height and area can be significantly smaller, increasing the usable warehouse space.
All batteries are centralized in one location. Inspection and maintenance are simplified.
Ventilation costs for the battery room are significantly reduced.
Costs associated with equipment damage are almost eliminated.
Battery replacement is easier and faster because the cart is equipped with rollers and a motor.
All chargers are centralized inside the battery room, preventing situations where a warehouse worker might decide to “quick-charge” during a coffee break or lunch. Such actions significantly reduce the lifespan of the batteries. The battery room allows charging to be standardized and extends the batteries’ lifespan.
A shared distilled water supply system is also an advantage of the battery room.
There is no need to purchase separate roller tracks with lift trucks! Overall, it can be said that their total cost is roughly the same as the cost of building the battery room.
